oh hello!
Valentine's Day was my little sister's Birthday so we had a party for her this past Saturday at our beautiful apartment. Obviously I had to go crazy making massive decorations and cupcakes...yus! I had an idea in my head how I wanted it to look and gathered inspiration from the following sources...............

I had originally planned on making these..............

On my hunt to find crepe paper however, I failed to find any in sheets, it was more difficult to find than I thought. If I had planned better I could have found some I'm sure but I had to come up with a plan B. I had a beautiful pile of tissue paper and decided to come up with my own version of all of these!

First I chose my colors and then I cut out a random triangle pattern through several layers of each color.
Then I cut fringe into the triangles like so »» »» »» »» »» »» »» »» »» »» »» »» »» »» »» »»
and then you get this awesomeness!! »» »» »» »» »» »» »» »» »» »» »» »» »» »» »» »»
Then you take your fringe pieces and wrap the folded edge of 1 fringed piece over twine, securing with tape; repeat.

through the windows is our sun porch/studio space so many windows isn't it a dream???!!! So right there you can see some of the stuff I was talking about covering yesterday but now you can't see it because I turned my storage bins into a Bench check it out HERE it's freaking awesome, I felt productive this weekend! I had so much fun and we are kind of in love with the banners...they may be a permanent installation...loves! I also made vegan cupcakes for sister, her favorite, chocolate and vanilla with chocolate buttercream frosting! I also made these little cupcake toppers out of cut wood pieces, sharpie oil paint pens and wood skewers...I didn't get a good picture of the detail though, they were painted in patterns and triangles.

I saw this how to on Apartment Therapy today and got really excited!!! I have 3 of these storage bins that were out on my sun porch/studio area and driving me nuts! I was thinking of making curtains to cover that storage area but they were blocking the windows as well so that would still be a problem. Not anymore!!! Now my problem is solved, I think this took me like 35 minutes in total and is super cute! I'm so HAPPY!!!
For the full tutorial look here it's super easy, super useful and all you need are your bins, some plywood, which I already had (a future canvas) and some fabric and then you get this.............

Being queer means leading a different sort of life. It’s not about the mainstream, profit-margins, patriotism, patriarchy or being assimilated. It’s not about executive directors, privilege and elitism. It’s about being on the margins, defining ourselves; it’s about gender-fuck and secrets, what’s beneath the belt and deep inside the heart; it’s about the night. Being queer is ”grass roots” because we know that everyone of us, every body, every cunt, every heart and ass and dick is a world of pleasure waiting to be explored. Everyone of us is a world of infinite possibility.

Ok so I read this little article on daily gay and I was excited because Wonder Woman is one of my all time FAVORITE Comic book Characters!! You may be thinking but why??? A fair question considering the pile of garbage I would call the last 25 years or so of her incarnations in the DC universe. My answer is part nostalgia and part true origin of the character. Let me stop here and say you can read the piece in its entirety here and please do!
I'm a child of the 1970's and early 80's and my brother and I spent our summers playing outside and getting to watch the cheesy TV versions of Comic Book Super Heroes. My two favorites were Spiderman and Wonder Woman (don't judge I was a kid) and I HATED The Hulk, ugh that show was terrible even as a kid and embodied a very angry, violent and domineering male character who you were always waiting to see if he would explode (domestic violence anyone?) yeah it didn't sit well with me.
Linda Carter!
Anyways I digress, I would sit in my Wonder Woman underoos and watch this woman kick butt on TV and as a girl drowning in pink, barbie and whiny princesses this was EXCITING for me!!! I felt strong, I felt powerful, I felt equal to my brother who's hero's were always cooler than mine! The toys too, I'm still scarred by how much better boys toys were, and She-ra was cool but her toys SUCKED...SUCKED...I once threw a bunch in the trash in an angry outrage at how LAME they were and then played he-man, she-ra doll free. At the time, I didn't get how sexually provocative the TV show was or I wouldn't even say that I guess just how anti-feminist and sexualized it was, I was just a kid, with my bad ass underoos and a chick on TV being fierce!
I really wish they still made these, hello!!! All my underwear would be superhero, how cool would that be...ok maybe just to me but still!!! It's very gender neutral too!
so coo! I mean they made these guys briefs at target that were super heroes and I got the transformers ones I like those but still it be cool to have a matching tank and/or sports bra!
I've been a Comics fan since I was a kid but in High School I was introduced to small press comics and Action girl which was an awesome anthology book by the amazing Sarah Dyer which was all by female artists and writers, I LOVED it and books like Girl Hero by Megan Kelso a more hardcore book, I still have my signed copies that I was almost to chicken to get...NERD! In mainstream comics however it was another story especially during that period of time the 1990's and early 2000's what I called the T & A period. I was really involved in comics, had a mini comic with 2 friends and ended up partnered with someone who became a very successful mainstream artist. It was all comics all the time. When I rediscovered mainstream Wonder Woman, I threw up in my mouth a little and then became completely outraged as a woman (how I identified at the time) a feminist and a human being. Stuff like the above picture just pissed me off and it was just the way she was often drawn it was the writing, it was TERRIBLE, they turned her into an idiot. I wrote a paper about it in school and it was through this journey of trying to reclaim the feminist icon of my youth that I discovered the true extreme feminist, homoerotic and bondage origins of my beloved character who was decades ahead of her time! That just pissed me off more because people were just crapping all over the remarkable work of her creator William Marston who was poly-amorous by the way um awesome! It's completely fascinating really, so I was really excited to see it on daily gay.
So check it out, you might fall in love with her, I know I did! Now if only someone could write her decently today! I'm not going to totally blame the writers, let me tell you the reality of writing for a character in the DC Universe is kind of a nightmare, I sure as hell wouldn't want to do it! The history, and storylines, logistics, costume and DC controls EVERYTHING, so if they don't like it, it's not going in and then if there is fan backlash, yikes! It's weird like every detail, once my ex drew Superman with too much bulge and it had to be changed...yep you read that right...meanwhile Wonder Woman and Cat woman are running around half naked giving themselves black eyes and back problems with their gigantic ta ta's...wow I can't believe I just typed ta ta's...I did it again! Anyways, hypocrisy much??? My point is they have an actual reference guide for how big his bulge can be...creepy. So writers don't have a lot to work with and DC isn't exactly keen on re-focusing on the feminist controversial beginnings of the character and honestly I don't think a lot of people who have written for her understand it and if they do they are being forced to tone it down. How cool would it be if she was re-imagined as a poly queer feminist warrior??? A queer can dream right?
I have these first two hardcover volumes I wish I had more!

Last weekend was my friend Amber's dog Pesto's Birthday and being the nerds that we are, we wanted to throw him a little Birthday Party! Also any excuse to get Pesto and Albie together because Albie loves Pesto and playing with friends and Pesto reluctantly loves Albie back. Amber and Pesto helped choose Albie when we were adopting him because they were our roommates!! Did I mention Pesto is a cutie pie who was turning 3???
So this was the plan of attack..........
It worked out quite well! For the cake we used a version of this recipe totally easy, the dogs went nuts for it and the yummy PB smell (we let them lick the batter and spoons!) We didn't use an egg, we used Bob's red mill egg replacer instead and the honey can easily be omitted/replaced for vegans like me! I also have a great recipe in My Sweet Vegan that is basically the same but vegan! We popped them (we also made cupcakes instead of one big cake) in the oven and then started on making the puppy hats! I also found some great recipes here with cool frosting ideas if your feeling extra adventurous!
For the party hats I found this pattern and even though the design was cute we wanted to make our own so we used it as a template instead!
we printed out the regular sized party hat
then we cutout the template
and got ready to trace it onto a nice thick card stock
we used stickers, glitter pens, wasabi tape, ribbon and little pom poms I had left over from another project!
After we were done decorating we made the cone shape and taped it on the inside with regular scotch tape. Then we cut little slits one on each side and thread the ribbon through taping on the inside to totally secure. For the pom poms we pulled the yarn strings at the top through the hole at the top of the hat and then taped those as well!
craft time!
Happy Birthday Pesto!!! (Albie's hat!)
Time to cool the cakes on a wire rack!
Get the pups ready! They were already tired from playing before it was even cake time haa haa!
mom please stop taking photos...
GIVE US CAKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
wait where did the cake go????
Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday dear Pesto, wait he's eating his cake!
caaaaaaaaaaakkkkkkkkeeeeeeeee!
So everyone had a blast!!!!! It was super easy, tons of fun and the pups were even more tired than us!!! I hope you enjoyed this puppy party diy as much as I did!! Super fun nerdy, crafty Sunday!
Oh and for kicks this pic of of Albie and Pesto, Albie's hat kept sliding down and with the flash and his light green eyes he looks like an evil villain!!!!

um hello hotness! Amos and Tuck my super hot friends, I really love this brand new image from Amos (who is hands down one of the most talented photographers I know) the clothes, the tough look in thier eyes and the tender hand hold. It's quite beautiful and moving. This one grabs me and even though I know them pretty well there is some mystery here. I love that. Mystery even when you know the subjects. Word Amos. You are the jam and Tuck is the beefcake.
PS!!! This image is from Amos Mac's new blog go check out his beautiful photos like right now, seriously!
